Helen Carr

Biography

I have a background in Social Anthropology (BA and MA, Lancaster University) which forms the basis for my area of interest in Fine Art. I have also worked extensively in exhibitions and the creative industries which, along with a keen interest in the built environment, informs the site sensitive approach to my work.

After a Foundation degree in Design and Creative Arts (Derby University), I followed a lifelong fascination with glass. I have developed my craft, learning from Nina Casson McGarva, Joseph Harrington, Angela Jarman and Fiaz Elson.

I am interested in exploring the crossover between Fine Art and Craft disciplines: the dynamic between functional, decorative and conceptual forms.

I am currently completing an MFA (Sheffield Institute of Art).

My Work

My work is conceptual and process driven: a set of problems to be solved and parameters to be determined.

I am exploring the remnants of cultures - ancient, modern and future. What do these artefacts suggest about hierarchies of importance within a culture and the dynamic between function and magic?

Originally a glass artist, I explore a variety of other materials from string and rope to perspex and vinyl to create site responsive sculptural installation. I am interested in the potential  and wonder of materials.

I am often drawn to temporal materials which capture a moment or change over time. I aim to bring into being pieces that offer a unique moment for the viewer to experience.
